Dougherty adapting Dead17

Actress Vanessa Hudgens being pursued for the lead

According to comic creator Josh Howard, screenwriter Michael Dougherty (X-Men 2 and Trick ‘r Treat) is working on the script for an adaptation of Howard’s Death@17 from Viper Comics with “High School Musical” actress Vanessa Hudgens being pursued for the lead.

Dead@17, a 4-issue comic about two girls trying to survive a zombie apocalypse. One of them, Nara Kilday, is killed but returns from the grave a prophesied savior, who uses her new abilities to fight evil. She then discovers she has to prevent the coming of Bolabogg, a demonic lord.

Paramount’s Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, GI Joe) will serve as producer. Dougherty’s directorial debut “Trick ‘r Treat”, a horror/comedy starring Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker and Leslie Bibb has yet to actually see the light of day as it has no distribution deal. Yet the movie has recieved rave reviews from horror fans and critics as a must see movie.

Dougherty also has plans for a tv series for the Fox network, “Bitches”, a dramedy about a quartet of female friends in New York who are werewolves, “Sex and the City” with werewolves.

Indie filmmaker Mark Steenlsand created a short prequel to Dead@17 a while back, showing the origin of the character. That fan made movie can be found over on Youtube.
