David Oyelowo and Kate Mara Toplining True Crime Thriller CAPTIVE

Leonor Varela and Mimi Rogers co-starring…

THR is reporting that British actor David Oyelowo (‘Jack Reacher,’ ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’) and Kate Mara (‘House of Cards,’ ‘127 Hours’) have been cast as the leads in veteran director Jerry Jameson’s true crime thriller, ‘Captive.’

Penned by Brian Bird and Reinhard Denke, the thriller is based on the true story of Brian Nichols (to be played by Oyelowo) who, on March 11 2005, broke out of a courthouse jail and shot dead the judge assigned to his case as well as a court reporter, sheriff’s deputy, and FBI officer.

Mara will take the role of Ashley Smith, “a single mother struggling with meth addiction who Nichols took hostage. Over the course of her ordeal, Smith used a book she had been given, Rick Warren’s ‘The Purpose Driven Life,’ to reason with her captor, with surprising results.”

Chilean actress Leonor Varela (‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ ‘Blade II’) and Mimi Rogers (‘For a Good Time, Call…,’ ‘Lucky’) are on board to co-star.

Oyelowo will also take a producers credit, producing via his Yoruba Saxon Productions banner. Brightside Entertainment and 1019 Entertainment will co-produce. Principal photography kicks off later this month.
