Deadline reports that Marion Cotillard (‘The Dark Knight Rises’) and Joaquin Phoenix (‘Two Lovers’) are set to star in James Gray’s next with Jeremy Renner (‘Hurt Locker’) in talks to join.
Titled ‘Low Life’ the movie centers on a woman attempting to immigrate from Poland. While sailing to New York to a new start, her American dream begins to turn into a nightmare with her sister growing deathly ill. She is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened. With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag, who persuades her to turn turn to prostitution.
Phoenix will play the charming sleazebag, while Renner would play his cousin, “a magician who falls for the young woman and is her best chance to escape the nightmarish life she has fallen into.”
