Variety is hearing that Chris Pine (‘Star Trek,’ ‘Jack Ryan’) in negotiations for the lead in Disney’s coast guard drama ‘The Finest Hours.’

Penned by James Tamasy and Eric Johnson (‘The Fighter’) and based on the bestselling 2010 non-fiction book by Casey Sherman and Michael Tougias, the plot revolves around a daring 1952 Coast Guard mission to rescue the crews of two oil tankers that collided off the New England coast.

‘Fright Night’ and ‘Lars and the Real Girl’ director Craig Gillespie is in talks to replace Robert Schwentke behind the camera. Schwentke recently dropped off the project to direct the ‘Divergent’ sequel ‘Insurgent.’
