Cate Blanchett licked by millions

Australia’s top actors to be commemorated in postal stamps

For years the Irish public had to put up with the most boring postage stamps on earth. We had licked the back of more birds, flowers and nativity scenes than we cared to remember. Then in 1996 that all changed when we put iconic Irish cinema scenes on our stamps. ‘Man of Aran’, ‘The Field’, ‘My Left Foot’ and ‘The Commitments’ were all immortalised in sticky formats.

Then in 2008 we went one better and we put Irish actors onto our stamps, Colm Meaney, Cillian Murphy, Pat Shortt and Brid Ni Neachtain all appeared on a series of postage stamps.

Now down under in Australia they are following suit and putting their greatest actors on their stamps. Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe and Geoffrey Rush will soon find themselves mailed across the world.

Cate Blanchett said she felt “utterly, deeply humbled and chuffed by the fact I’m on a stamp”.

“I’m going to be licked by millions of Australians and I can’t wait.”

While, Nicole Kidman, who has also received her country’s highest civilian award ‘The Companion of the order of Australia’ said “Something like this – when you see your face on a stamp – says ‘wow… my children will be able to lick a stamp, put it on an envelope and say ‘that’s my mum”.

The one question remains, why didn’t Hugh Jackman get a stamp? Or Harold from Neighbours for that matter.
