BENGALI DETECTIVE Hires Mira Nair

Sabrina Dhawan to script the crime drama.

Indian helmer Mira Nair (‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist,’ ‘Amelia’) has closed a dealt to take the director’s chair the crime drama ‘Bengali Detective’ for Fox Searchlight and Scott Free, say Variety.

The film is based on the documentary directed by Phil Cox and focuses on “an intrepid private eye in Calcutta’s criminal underworld whose dream is to dance on Indian TV.”

Nair’s ‘Monsoon Wedding’ scribe Sabrina Dhawan is on board to pen the script. Michael Costigan is producing.

‘Bengali Detective’ was previously set up with Stephen Frears (‘The Queen,’ ‘Mrs Henderson Presents’) directing from a script by ‘High Fidelity’ screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis.
