‘Bazooka Joe’ heading to big screen

Michael Eisner has confirmed he intends to turn the Bazooka Joe comic strip into a feature film.

The character originated as a marketing idea for bubble gum in the 1950s. Wearing an unexplained eye-patch, Joe embarks on adventures with his friends Pesty, Mort, Toughie, Hungry Herman, Jane and a pet dog called Walkie Talkie.

Mark Hammer will write the script for the big screen adaptation.

The Bazooka comic and gum brand is owned by the Topps trading card company, which Eisner, the former head of Disney, purchased in 2007 for $380 million.
