Feature Ten Movies To See This September

Soldiers, Stoners and Strippers – Movies.ie counts down the ten essential movies to see this September.

(1) TROPIC THUNDER

What’s it about...
A
group of self-absorbed actors sets out to make the most expensive war
film. But when ballooning costs force the studio to abandon the movie,
the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into
the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they encounter real bad guys….

Why you should see it…
Jack
Black, Robert Downey Jr., Ben Stiller and Steve Coogan to boot!
Stiller’s first effort behing the camera since ‘Zoolander’ knocked the
‘Dark Knight’ from its number one spot.
With thunderous laughter from start to finish, expect it to  repeat its success this side of the Atlantic.

(2) THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS

What’s it about...

Seth
Rogen is Dale, the beefy rotund guy who delivers subpoenas for a
living. He also dates a young jail-bait cutie, Angie (Amber Heard),
when he’s not visiting his sweet stoner of a pot dealer, Saul Silver
(James Franco) to score the latest and greatest weed. In this case
that’s the title star, Pineapple Express, a marijuana combination so
lethal and unique Dale is almost (we said ALMOST) reluctant to destroy
it by inhaling. But when he sets out to deliver a subpoena to drug
kingpin Ted Jones (Gary Cole), he is spotted by the man as he commits a
bloody murder. Freaking out, Dale ditches the scene so fast he dumps
some of the precious weed, leaving it behind like a trail of
breadcrumbs dropped by Hansel, leading a trail to Saul. Reefer madness
ensues as a full-blown freak out is set in motion.

Why you should see it…

A stoner action-comedy might
sound like an odd genre combo, but with Superbad writers at the helm
and Seth Rogen and James Franco starring, ‘Pineapple Express’
is a lot of fun if you like your frivolity generously mixed with carnage.

(3) THE DUCHESS

What’s it about...

The
story of an extraordinary woman who rose to fame by staying true to her
passions in a world of protocol, gossip and social rules–and paid the
price. Long before the concept existed, the Duchess of Devonshire,
Georgiana Spencer, was the original “It Girl.”  Determined to be a
player in the wider affairs of the world, she proved that she could
out-gamble, out-drink and outwit most of the aristocratic men who
surrounded her. She helped usher in sweeping changes to England as a
leader of the forward-thinking Whig Party. But even as her power and
popularity grew, she was haunted by the fact that the only man in
England she seemingly could not seduce was her very own husband, the
Duke. And, when she tried to find her own way to be true to her heart
and loyal to her duty, the resulting controversies and convoluted
liaisons would leave all of London talking…

Why you should see it…

If
your genre of choice is the Period Drama than ‘The Duchess’ is one you
won’t want to miss. Kiera Knightley gives a solid performances as
Duchess of Devonshire, with many likening the story to that of Princess Diane (thankfully Candle in the Wind plays no part).

the mother to April that she was never able to be, April seems to find
solace in the arms of the parent of one of her students (Colin Firth),
only to find that the mystery to life’s questions cannot be solved by a
simple revelation.

Why you should see it...

For Helen
Hunt, who proves she really can do it all–co-writing, directing,
co-producing and starring–in this heartfelt dramedy about a
schoolteacher in mid-life crisis. It’s not ”as good as it gets” but
‘Then She Found Me’ is commendable nonetheless.

and lands in an underground strip club. As the virus begins to spread,
turning the strippers into ‘Super Zombie Strippers’, the girls struggle
with whether or not to conform to the new ‘fad’ even if it means there
is no turning back.

Why you should see it…

Ok, we admit ‘Zombie Strippers’ won’t be
winning any awards but for the cheese factor alone, this is a worthy
and camp watch.

(9) RIGHTEOUS KILLS

What’s it about...

Two veteran New York City
detectives (De Niro and Pacino) work to identify the possible
connection between a recent murder and a case they believe they solved
years ago; is there a serial killer on the loose, or did they perhaps
put the wrong person behind bars?

Why you should see it…

With a jaw dropping opening
scene, DeNiro and Pacino prove that these two veteran actors can still
generate ‘heat’ on screen. A must for fans.

It’s Deliverance without the rednecks, this ‘hoodie horror’ disturbs from the get go. Not for the faint of heart!
