Ari Folman To Helm Animated Anne Frank Feature

Will write and direct the animated film…

Acclaimed Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman (‘The Congress,’ ‘Waltz with Bashir’) is to write and direct a family-driven animated feature based on the life and diary of Anne Frank.

Set to begin production next winter, the film will tell the harrowing story of a young Jewish girl who, with her family and their friends at forced into hiding in an attic in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam.

Folman’s film has full access to all the archives of the Anne Frank Fonds Basel, which was founded in 1963 by Anne’s father Otto Frank.

“Bringing the Anne Frank Diary to all screens is a fantastic opportunity and challenge as there is a real need for new artistic material to keep the memory alive for younger generations,” said Folman.

Newly-formed banner Purple Whale Films, co-owned by Folman’s Israeli production company, Bridgit Folman Film Gang, will co-produce the feature with Diana Elbaum’s Belgian production outfit Entre Chien et Loup.
