Five Great Fake Bands Wed Like to Meet

Articles | 03 Sep 2010 | 12 comments

Movies.ie salutes Electric Picnic goers this weekend with 5 faux bands we'd like to meet!

ROCK: Spinal Tap (This Is Spinal Tap)

Spinal Tap are the undisputed champions of film bands - so much so that they have completely emerged from the film that spawned them and out into the real world. It's no surprise though as this is the movie band that turned everything up to 11 giving us classics like Big Bottom, Stonehenge and Sex Farm, not to mention guitarist Nigel Tufnel's emotional opus Lick My Love Pump.

ELECTRO: Autobahn (The Big Lebowski)

Three German nihilists of a techno-pop band in the movie The Big Lebowski with one of the members being Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The cover of their fake album was a knock-off of real band Kraftwerk. Though we never hear them play, the characters themselves easily earn the last spot on this list.

ROCK: Stillerwater (Almost Famous)

Music so era-appropriate and well crafted, it makes us want to stop bathing, grow out our hair, and follow this non-existant band across the country. If Kate Hudson overdoses on quaaludes along the way, so be it...

ALTERNATIVE/GLAM ROCK: Hedwig and the Angry Inch" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch:

That wig, that wardrobe, that music! Where the penis used to be, and the vagina never was, comes a sound so gender-bending, so anatomy-warping, that we're no longer sure what we've got going on down there. And not in a bad way; in fact, it's rather refreshing.

CHEESE/80s: Dirk Diggler and Chest Rockwell (Boogie Nights)

It's one of the biggest movie injustices of all time that the musical duo formed by Dirk Diggler (Mark Wahlberg) and Chest Rockwell (John C. Reilly) in Boogie Nights never got the record deal they so deserved! The duo know that they will not be able to stay in the porn industry forever so they decide to exploit their other talents, specifically for performing soft rock songs while dressed in questionable 80's leisure wear! Their cover of The Touch (from the original Transformers movie no less!) is a thing of genius.

I'd pick 'The Lone Rangers' from Airheads. Brendan Fraser, Adam Sandler, and Steve Buscemi.Great movie. And make sure you know the answer to 'Who would win in a fight between Lemmy and God?'

I loved "Citizen Dick" (Pearl Jam + Matt Damon) in Singles! Their song "Touch me I'm Dick" was brilliant lol

Where's Fluffy from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. You never see them or hear their music but people really loved them.

The Rutles!!! 'All You Need is Cash' started it all. Eric Idle & Neil Innes' masterpiece, with Neil's incredible music (and performance). Also, who can resist Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry! :D

Have to say Walk Hard is one of my favourite movies, great songs and dialogue. BUT.....The band I'd like to put forward for consideration is Strange Fruit from the movie Still Crazy. Songs like, All over the world and The flame still burns, fantastic!!!!!
