10 Things you need to know about Melissa McCarthy

We bring you the facts about the TAMMY star…

TAMMY is released in Irish cinemas this week, and stars Melissa McCarthy as a woman whose life is in a downward spiral. A spin on the classic roadtrip movie, TAMMY also stars Susan Sarandon and Mark Duplass. To celebrate the release of the movie, we bring you the facts about the Oscar winning star of TAMMY.

1. Family Ties
McCarthy’s cousin is Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, actress and model Jenny McCarthy.

2. Double Act
Although one of her most famous roles to date was as part of a cop duo in THE HEAT, McCarthy’s real life other half – Ben Falcone – is her true partner in crime. Falcone and McCarthy married in 2005, and he often makes cameos in her films. As well as this, Falcone co-wrote and directed TAMMY.

3. Dress Up
McCarthy told Redbook magazine that when she was Oscar nominated for her role in BRIDESMAIDS – an award she went on to win – she had trouble finding a designer to dress her. The experience inspired the actress – who studied Clothing and Textiles in college – to create her own clothing line with couturier Daniella Pearl.

4. Gilmore Girls
Although one of her first movie roles was as Doris in CHARLIE’S ANGELS, the actress truly came to prominence with her role as Sookie St. James in TV’s GILMORE GIRLS.

5. Melissa Who?
between 2007 and 2009, McCarthy played Dena in SAMANTHA WHO? The TV show created by our own Cecelia Ahern. The show also starred Christina Applegate and Jennifer Esposito.

6. Multitasker
McCarthy also currently stars in the TV show MIKE & MOLLY; she directed an episode of the show recently, which starred her TAMMY co-star Susan Sarandon.

7. Fully Coordinated
While she was doing stand up in New York, and before she got her big break, McCarthy worked as production coordinator on two episodes of THE WEIRD AL SHOW in 1997.

8. Awards
As well as her Oscar for her performance in BRIDESMAIDS, McCarthy has won an Emmy for her work on MIKE & MOLLY and been nominated for several more accolades, including the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her work as host on Saturday Night Live.

9. Workaholic
McCarthy has signed on for two more seasons of MIKE & MOLLY, so can only make movies on her break from the show. That doesn’t slow her down though, Melissa commuted between Massachusetts and LA to work on THE HEAT, and returned to work shortly after giving birth to both her daughters.

10. Murray McCarthy
After TAMMY, McCarthy’s next project is ST. VINCENT, a comedy she is filming with Bill Murray. That’s sure to be a hoot!

TAMMY is released in Irish cinemas on July 4th 2014
